Who may pay

Will insurance cover the medicine?

Coverage follows the exact product, the reason it is prescribed and the rules of the plan. The medicine name alone does not decide it.

Medicare

Does Medicare cover weight-loss medicine?

As of September 2026, Medicare drug-benefit law still excluded medicines when used for weight loss.

The same medicine can be coverable when prescribed for another accepted use, such as diabetes or reducing certain heart risks.

As of September 2026, Medicare’s temporary Bridge program offered certain weight medicines for a $50 monthly copay through the end of 2027. Eligibility depended on age, weight, health conditions and Medicare Part D history.

That $50 did not count toward the Part D deductible or yearly out-of-pocket total, and the programme did not add a low-income subsidy.

Other routes

What else changes the answer?

Workplace or private plan

Ask whether the exact medicine is on the plan’s drug list, for the exact reason it is being prescribed, and what prior approval is needed.

Maker savings card

Maker savings cards for branded weight and diabetes medicines are limited to people with commercial insurance and exclude Medicare, Medicaid and military coverage.

Health account

When a doctor diagnoses the condition being treated, a prescribed medicine can generally be bought with health savings account or flexible spending account funds.

Call script

What do you ask the plan?

  • Is the exact generic and brand on the drug list for this diagnosed condition?
  • Is prior approval required?
  • Does the plan require a particular pharmacy?
  • What is the member cost for a normal fill?
Brief source note

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) page below explains the temporary Medicare program. The IRS guide explains which medical expenses health accounts may pay.

Ask about the exact reason for use

Coverage for diabetes does not prove coverage for weight. Ask about the diagnosed condition on the prescription.
