In person or online
What does getting real care involve?
A website can start a search. Care begins when a licensed clinician assesses you, explains the plan and remains reachable for follow-up.
The visit
What happens before a prescription?
- Your goal becomes specific
The clinician asks what is changing, what has already been tried and what a useful result would look like.
- Your medical history is reviewed
Expect questions about current medicines, past problems, allergies and records that matter to the decision.
- The product is named
The answer covers the generic name, product status, reason for use, follow-up and total cost.
- There is room for “no”
A real assessment can end without a prescription or can move to an in-person exam or testing.
Texas telehealth
Can a first visit happen online?
As of September 2026, a doctor treating a person who is in Texas generally needs a full Texas medical licence.
In Texas, a clinician can begin caring for a new patient online through live video or by reviewing relevant images or medical records.
Texas telehealth care must meet the same standard as in-person care. Before the visit, the clinician must get your informed consent: your permission after the visit has been explained.
After a first online Texas visit, the clinician must explain follow-up care and, with consent, send a report to the patient’s regular doctor within 72 hours.
Brief source note
The Texas law and Medical Board rules below set the duties for online care.
What feels too thin?
The Federation of State Medical Boards, a national group that issues guidance rather than law, says a fixed online form is not a proper assessment if the clinician cannot ask follow-up questions.
A menu of treatments is not a diagnosis. Look for a conversation that can change direction.
